Switzerland, made for painters

In spring, Switzerland offers an extraordinary palette.

The meadows are intensely green and scattered with colorful flowers. Above them rise dark forests, pale rock faces and snow-covered peaks. Turquoise lakes reflect the changing sky, while waterfalls descend from the mountains, replenished by the melting snow.

​Watch—and capture—the changing light as it moves across the mountains, turning distant snow and rock from cool blues and violets to warm golds and pinks.

Our hotels have been selected not only for their comfort, character and service, but also for their exceptional settings. At every principal hotel, you will find inspiring subjects within the grounds or a very short walk away. Your hosts Lori and Peter will show you the breathtaking painting spots they have carefully scouted.

A carefully selected Swiss destination management company will professionally and reliably handle the travel arrangements, including hotels, private transportation, luggage logistics and scheduled transfers. Airport and additional hotel transfers can also be arranged as well as optional experiences from mountain railways and panoramic viewpoints to cultural visits and other Swiss discoveries.
The journey
Lucerne

Our journey begins in Lucerne, where painted façades, church towers and historic wooden bridges meet Lake Lucerne, with the Alps rising beyond the rooftops.

After checking into our hotel, we will gather for a relaxed welcome reception. The remainder of the day will be free to explore the old town or settle comfortably into the rhythm of the journey.

**One night in Lucerne**
Lake Brienz and Grandhotel Giessbach

We continue into the Bernese Oberland to the magnificent **Grandhotel Giessbach**, overlooking the intensely turquoise waters of Lake Brienz.

Surrounded by forest and beside the celebrated Giessbach Falls, this historic Belle Époque hotel is a destination in itself. Its grand interiors and fabulous art collection will leave painters in awe, while its gardens and grounds offer a remarkable variety of subjects immediately outside the door.

Paint the white water of the falls against the dark forest, the changing reflections on the turquoise lake, the gardens or the elegant hotel architecture—or simply enjoy the atmosphere of this extraordinary place.

**Two nights at Grandhotel Giessbach**
Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen

In Grindelwald, vivid spring meadows and traditional chalets lie beneath the snowy summits and immense north face of the Eiger.

Excellent painting subjects will be accessible close to our hotel. We will also visit Lauterbrunnen, where waterfalls descend from towering cliffs toward green pastures, wooden farmhouses and small villages.

Choose an accessible painting location, walk farther with Lori or Peter, explore the village or join an optional excursion.

**Two nights in Grindelwald**
Zermatt and the Matterhorn

Our journey culminates in car-free Zermatt beneath the unmistakable Matterhorn.

Morning light catches its snowy ridges. Clouds gather and disappear around its summit. Shadows move across its steep faces, continually transforming its color and character.

Paint close to the hotel, travel by mountain railway to another viewpoint, explore Zermatt or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the high Alps.

On our final evening, we will gather for a farewell drink and dinner, sharing the paintings, stories and memories of our journey.

Paint—or simply enjoy Switzerland

Lori and Peter will both offer demonstrations, individual guidance and practical help. Their teaching will be encouraging and flexible, helping each participant find subjects and compositions suited to their interests and experience.

Every painting session is optional.

You may paint throughout the day, make a few quick studies or put down your brushes and enjoy the hotel, take an excursion, explore a village or settle onto a terrace with a glass of wine. Swiss scenery is demanding in many ways; occasionally it insists that you do absolutely nothing but admire it.

Lori McNee, based in Sun Valley, Idaho, is an accomplished American painter and experienced art educator known for her warm, encouraging teaching style.

Peter Stalder is a Swiss-British artist and instructor based near Lake Geneva. His knowledge of Switzerland has helped shape the itinerary, the choice of hotels and the selection of painting locations.

Lori and Peter will host the group together and share the painting instruction throughout the journey.
